Dr Chisomo Msefula

Principal Investigator
Chisomo is a Research Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi, in Blantyre Malawi. My research focus has largely been on describing the molecular epidemiology of invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa. Recently the scope of work has expanded to include typhoid fever following the epidemic increase of Salmonella Typhi isolation at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre. Collective achievements have been the description of the invasive S. Typhimurium strain sequence type ST313 in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and recently the identification of S. Typhi haplotype H58 as the epidemic strain in SSA and Malawi. I am also developing a PCR technique to diagnose invasive Salmonella in blood to improve case ascertainment at QECH, in Blantyre.

Professor E L Corbett,

Co-Principal Investigator

Liz Corbett is a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow and a Clinical Epidemiologist with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, based full time in Blantyre, Malawi. Her main research interests concern control of TB in HIV prevalent populations from the public health perspective, with a focus on the epidemiology at primary care and community level, and intervention trials. She is a member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for the TB Programme of the World Health Organization. Her research has highlighted the public health importance of undiagnosed infectious TB and community-level interventions providing access to TB and HIV diagnosis.  She has ongoing research in self-testing for HIV, management of smear-negative TB suspects, TB diagnostic evaluation, and in the epidemiology of adolescent long-term survivors of mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection.
